Jean Louise"Scout' Finch (Pictured Top Left)
Previously in TKAM: We saw Scout as the rough and tough tomboy who did mind that she wasn't as lady-like as the other girls in Maycomb. She played with the boys and idolized her father Atticus.
Today in GSAW: Our protagonist Scout is all grown up at 26 years old and attended a woman's college. She now lives in New York City, but in this novel she goes to Maycomb to visit Atticus who is elderly. While in Maycomb, Scout must come to terms with the fact that things are not the way she left them. Scout deals with themes of change and love in this coming of age story.
Henry “Hank” Clinton (Pictured Top Center)
Previously in TKAM: Hank was not a character in TKAM.
Today in GSAW: Henry is a friend of Scout's brother, Jem, growing up. Today Hank is in love with Scout and wants her to marry him. Hank is not from a prominent family like the Finches so Scout's Aunt Alexandra does not approve of their relationship. Atticus is Henry's mentor in the law office.
Atticus Finch (Pictured Top Right)
Previously in TKAM: Atticus was the beloved lawyer and father to his children. He defended and African American man in a rape trial, which was controversial in the small town of Maycomb. To Scout he was a symbol of courage and wisdom, as well as the epitome of good.
Today in GSAW: As an older gentleman, Atticus has not lived up to Scout's expectations. Despite Atticus' progressive actions in TKAM, with the passing years we see that Atticus has become racist and attends white supremacist meetings. His actions disappoint Scout in the novel.
Uncle Jack Finch( Pictured bottom Center)
Previously in TKAM: Uncle Jack was not a character in TKAM.
Today in GSAW: Uncle Jack is another father-like figure Scout looked up to while growing up. Unfortunately, in this novel Scout's expectations are again shattered when Uncle Jack attends white supremacist meeting with Atticus.
Aunt Alexandra Finch ( Pictured Bottom Left)
Previously in TKAM: Aunt Alexandra was the astute, proper, and all around symbol of a lady in MAycomb. Scout and Alexandra have different views on what is proper for a lady to do. She always wanted to change Scout's tomboy appearance and actions.
Today in GSAW: Nothing about Aunt Alexandra has really changed since TKAM, she is still a prim and proper lady trying the force Scout to be the same. The main disagreement between Scout and Alexandra is that she disapproves of Henry Clinton.
Calpurnia ( Pictured Bottom Right)
Previously in TKAM: Calpurnia was the Finch's primary care-giver and a mother figure to Scout. She stayed with the Finch's until the children were grow.
Today in GSAW: Calpurnia is old and frail. Scout and Calpurnia's relationship is estranged due to the tensions from the civil rights movement.
Jem Finch ( Pictured below)
Previously in TKAM: Jem was Scout's playmate and best friend. He was her leader and adventure partner. Growing up, Scout could always count on Jem to stand by her.
Today in GSAW: In GSAW we learn that Jem has unfortunately passed due to heart disease.
