It all began in Monroeville Alabama...Harper Lee was born on April 28, 1926. Her family consisted of three other children, in addition to her father( who, like Atticus, was a lawyer), and her mother, who suffered from a mental disorder. Lee fell in love with writing during her high school years, and wrote for school newspapers at both colleges she attended. After a summer of soul searching, Lee chose not to pursue a career in law, as she planned, and dropped out of college at age 23.
After working at a ticket booth for a British airline, her friends: Michael and Joy Brown, offered to support her as Lee took a year off to write. Lee dove into creating the manuscript for To Kill a Mockingbird, which was published with widespread acclaim in 1961. Following her success, Lee grew more reclusive and made few public appearances. Harper Lee died in an assisted living facility in February of 2016, just a year after the release of her final work: Go Set a Watchman. |

"I never expected any sort of success with 'Mockingbird'... I sort of hoped someone would like it enough to give me encouragement."
